Cable Bolting 101
Cable bolting is an established technique used extensively for reinforcement of the rock mass adjacent to surface and underground rock excavations. Cable bolts are long, fully grouted, un-tensioned reinforcing elements. The objective of cable bolting is to improve the shear and tensile strength of the rock mass.
Although there are many variations of this procedure and related products, such as specialized cables and grouts, ultimately the grout must be a high shear thixotropic mixture that will stop flowing once the pumping pressure is relieved that will provide the required strengths and in situ expansion.
Materials 5/8" seven strand cable - 29 tons tensile strength
¾" dia. plastic grout hose (20mm)
Portland type 10 Cement + admixtures as required (for heat, cold, extreme distances)
Wooden wedges
Equipment: Long hole Drill - 2-1/8" dia. holes 15 to 200 feet long (50mmdia. x 5 to 60m)
Grout Mixer/Pump - high density, high shear mix, thixotropic
0.30/1 water/cement ratio by weight
Grout Facts:
Utilizing grout at 0.3:1 water:cement ratio (sg = 2.11) a 20kg bag of cement requires 6L of water.
In practice 100 feet (30m) of 2 1/8" (50mm) cable bolted hole requires approximately 25 kg bag of cement + water, depending on local conditions.
